Foundational Literacy and Numeracy forms the basis of all future learning for children

What is Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN)?

Foundational Literacy

The ability to identify letters (a, d, h), words (at, cat, ball); read them fluently with meaning

Foundational Numeracy

Being able to identify numbers such as 25, 82, 76, and solve basic maths problems like addition and subtraction

Why Does FLN Matter?

Grades 1 and 2 are critical for children as this is when they learn the most.

Children need to attain these skills by class 3 otherwise they struggle to catch up later and risk dropping out of schools.

FLN skills ensure every child has an equal shot at success. It is linked to higher employability and consequently improved life outcomes, and higher GDP for the country.

Strong foundation improves long term equity and growth. It can lift 171 million people out of poverty in the world, according to UNESCO
