About the Campaign

Launched by the Ministry of Education in 2021, the NIPUN Bharat Mission has put foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) at the heart of India’s education agenda, aligned with the vision of NEP 2020.

With a clear goal of ensuring FLN skills for all Grade 3 learners by 2026–27, the Mission has moved from policy to classroom practice in these five years.

Hearing from FLN Champions

Since the launch of Uttar Pradesh’s FLN Mission in September 2019, the state has focussed on ensuring FLN proficiency for all students in Grades 1 to 3. Accompanying this push from the state is the tireless effort of parents, who only want their children to soar higher and higher!

In this video, hear from Munita Vishwakarma (Mother of a Grade 2 student, Nikhil) from Gorakhpur on the transformational changes that she sees today in her child and the education system at large – indeed inspiring.

What role can large scale assessments play in shaping teaching-learning in the classroom? India is currently witnessing a shift in how students are learning as part of the NIPUN Bharat Mission. With data at the core of all interventions, national and state governments are working towards ensuring that information on students’ learning is available and actionable.

In this video, hear from Benjamin Piper (Director of Global Education, Gates Foundation) on how India is a great example of such data-backed, decision making which is driving real change in FLN classrooms.

As India marks four years since the launch of the NIPUN Bharat Mission, CSF’s Shaveta Sharma-Kukreja (CEO and MD) and Romonika D Sharan (Project Director, Policy and Communications) write in The Hindu, where they lay out what it will take for us to build a bold roadmap for sustaining the Mission’s positive impact. There is evidence of change – not just in survey results, but also in the stories of students, teachers and parents across states. The need of the hour is to take stock and look ahead with an ambition of ensuring that FLN and  NIPUN continue to remain at the core of India’s education reform journey.

Seema Rai is transforming education from the ground up. In a government school of Gorakhpur, she is using story-based learning, yoga and community involvement to spark curiosity and build confidence in her students. By blending tradition with innovation, Seema is creating a classroom where every child feels seen, heard and empowered.
